We all know that bananas are a high-energy super-fruit with numerous health benefits.But did you know that banana stems contain amazing health benefits too? The stem of the banana plant has even more beneficial properties than the fruit itself and helps cure various disorders. Its high fiber content cleanses our digestive system, which in turn keeps many diseases away. Banana stem is also an excellent home remedy for various ailments like obesity, kidney stones, diabetes, constipation, UTI, acidity, etc.


The Banana stem is called Baale dindu in Kannada and Bambe in Tulu.The outer layers of the banana stem are peeled away and the fibrous inner core of the stalk is eaten. It has a crisp texture and mild taste, and is often used in curries, stir fries and pachadis across South Indian households. Today I am sharing the recipe of a smoked banana stem chutney that pairs well with steamed rice. This recipe is adapted from a cookery show and I absolutely love it. a healthy and delicious chutney with the goodness of banana stem

Ingredients
  • 1 banana stem piece - 2 to 3 inches long
  • 2 tablespoon chana dal
  • 1 teaspoon fenugreek seeds /menthe / methi
  • 2 to 3 dried red chillies byadgi
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds / jeerige / jeera
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 2 pinch asafoetida / hing
  • 1 small piece of tamarind
  • salt to taste
to temper
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • few curry leaves
Instructions
  1. Remove outer layers of banana stem one by one but leave the last layer on.
  2. Switch on the gas and turn the flame to medium.Place the stem directly on top of your stove burner.
  3. Using a pair of tongs, turn every 5 minutes or so, until the entire surface of banana stem is charred and crispy, about 15 minutes. Don't worry if it deflates a little. Remove from the burner and place on a plate to cool.
  4. Meanwhile heat a pan and dry roast the chana dal, fenugreek seeds, chillies and cumin seeds till aromatic. Transfer to a mixer jar.
  5. Add coconut, asafoetida, tamarind and salt to the mixer jar and pulse a few times.
  6. Once the banana stem is cool enough to touch with your hands, carefully peel the charred skin off and discard it. Roughly chop the stem and transfer the chopped pieces to the mixer jar containing the coarsely ground mixture.
  7. Pulse a couple of times till the mixture turns smooth. Remove to the serving bowl.
  8. To temper - Heat oil in a ladle Add cumin seeds followed by curry leaves. Once they turn crisp add them to the to the chutney.

  9. Healthy and delicious Banana stem Chutney is ready to be served.
