Ellu Bella | Ellu Bella Mix Recipe for Sankranti

Hello Lovely Readers,

Wish you all a Happy Makara Sankranthi (in Advance)  🌺🌼

Sankranti , as you know,is an auspicious day and is celebrated with much fanfare and festivities across India. In Bangalore-Mysore regions of Karnataka this festival of harvest is celebrated by exchanging “Ellu-Bella” (ಎಳ್ಳು ಬೆಲ್ಲ) with family and friends.
Having lived in Mysore, Sankranti brings back to me memories of watching pretty girls in my neighborhood wearing new clothes, visiting their near and dear ones and exchanging the Sankranti offering in a plate. The plate would normally contain ‘Ellu-Bella’ , ‘Sakkare Acchu'(sugar candy), a piece of sugarcane , bananas , beetle leaves, nut and berries. This custom of exchanging ellu bella is called “Ellu Birodhu”. The popular saying in Kannada ಎಳ್ಳು ಬೆಲ್ಲ ತಿಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಮಾತಾಡಿ “ellu bella thindu olle maathadi” literally translates to “eat the mixture of sesame seeds and jaggery and speak only good”.

Needless to say getting to eat homemade ellu bella and melt in the mouth sakkare achu was my favorite part of the festival.Though ellu bella and sakkare achu were available at stores in the market , it was no match to the taste of the homemade ones.Ah ! the happiness when you got a special design of homemade milky white sakkare achu ! Priceless !!

Ellu Bella

My joy knew no bounds when Mom eventually learnt and started making Ellu bella and sakkare achu at home. I never got into learning how to make them till I moved to Abu Dhabi after marriage. But now I do 🙂 So Today let me share the recipe of Ellu bella , a delicious mix of peanuts, coconut , jaggery, roasted gram and most importantly ellu (sesame seeds). This Indian version of trail mix has protein , calcium and iron which helps the body to rejuvenate and hence makes a perfect guilt free and healthy snack for winters .
