Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi is a festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha. Ganesh Chaturthi is the celebration of new beginnings, togetherness and bliss. It is one of the most anticipated and lively festivals and is celebrated with great fervor every year.Much like other Indian festivals, Ganesh Chaturthi has some unique delicacies, which are offered to Lord Ganesha as naivedya and later served as a prasad. One such delight which is famous across coastal Karnataka is Panchakajjaya.

Panchakajjaya is believed to be Lord Ganesha’s favourite. Pancha means “five” and Kajjaya means “sweet”. And as the name goes this sweet naivedya is prepared using five basic ingredients ( dal, jaggery, coconut, sesame seeds and ghee) Any additional ingredients like cardamom, sugarcane pieces can be added to enhance the flavors. Panchakajjya can be prepared using whole moong (green gram / hesarukalu) , moong dal (split green gram / hesarubele ) or even poha (beaten rice / avalakki). Today I am sharing the recipe of Moong Dal Panchakajjaya. So simple to make and yet so tasty. This Ganesh Chaturthi, do make this delicious Panchakajjaya and offer it to Lord Ganapati !

a delicious prasad made using 5 basic ingredients


  • 1 cup moong dal (hesaru bele)
  • 1 cup grated jaggery
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1 tablespoon jaggery
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • Step 1 Heat a thick bottomed kadai. Dry roast the moong dal till golden.
  • Step 2 Transfer to a plate and allow it to cool. Once cooled, add the dal to a blender(mixer) and pulse a couple of times to get a coarse powder.
  • Step 3 Transfer it to a bowl.Add the jaggery and coconut to the bowl.
  • Step 4 Dry roast the sesame seeds.Once they start popping , switch off the heat and add them to the bowl.
  • Step 5 Next goes in the cardamom powder and ghee. Mix everything well (best done with hands).
  • Step 6 Delicious Panchakajjaya is ready!

*Increase or decrease the quantity of jaggery as per your preference.
